$42 Million

The Wise County Board of Supervisors approved an amount of $42 million to Wise County Schools tonight. Now what will happen? Perhaps two new schools.

Very interesting... I have thought 2 schools all along.. It might make for a much smoother transitiion, b/c of all of the people that are only worried about sports, instead of the curriculim factor.

I am going to go for the one school format. Even with 42 million, one school will be a stretch.

$42 million is a joke, it just brings about more questions. Who to consolidate? I'm guessing PV/Appy then one school for JJK/Pound/Coeburn/Saint Paul?

2 votes against this with Lunsford and Short voting no. Acutally 52 million was proposed first and this ended in a tie. Bet you can figure this one out.

And as the $42 million, I know not many pay attention but for the system to apply for grants, 0% loans, etc they have to have a willingness by the county to put money to it. The $42 plus the additional $9 that was already in reserve is not enough for the 3 new schools plan but it does give the school board the opportunity to go forward and check into the loans, or even go forward with trying to get the issue put to a decision on bonds. Basically while the BOS did nothing, the school board could do nothing. Now that there is money earmarked for the schools, the pressure goes back onto the school board and they have to decide what to try.

I have a couple of theories. 1 is they leave St. Paul be, its the newest school, but they need to figure out something to do to make up the money lost with Wise County paying for Russel county students. They then could go with the 2 schools and assume that St. Paul, Norton, Dickenson, or whomever assorbs some.

Go with the 3 and be the ones discussed for a long time.

I also think that now that there is commitment, they should check about Norton in on it again if they bring another $10 million or so there (no idea on actual numbers), you get closer to the range needed and the idea of 3 schools the same dimensions makes no sense as the enrollment at St. Paul/Coeburn is not close to the Pound/Kelly or Appy/PV combos. So if you go with 3 schools, 2 should be bigger, 1 smaller unless Norton is in.

It's not an answer, $51 total is not going to build anything but one school (and think of the logistical nightmares there of anythings sports wise), but it gives them a number to start with and work forward with.

I figure the election, where the strongest anti-consolidation barely was able to win her 'domain' might have shown them that no, not everybody is against consolidation, but they do want it done right. Who knows if it will be done right or not but at least its not in quite the holding pattern it was.
